Intel has one last Core-based processor to launch before moving on to the Nehalem architecture. According to a news story at celipse, Intel is planning to launch a six-core server processor, dubbed Dunnington, as soon as possible, possibly even in Q2. Dunnington is basically three Penryn dies side by side sharing 16MB of L3 cache. Dunnington will work with Intel’s Caneland platform based on the Clarksboro chipset.

Fitting up to four of these on a single motherboard will get you a 24-core solution in a box. The chip is reported not to break 2 billion transistors, but is evidently very close. TDp is suppose to be beyond the 120W envelope
