Intel’s Core i7 family is holding off AMD’s Phenom II processors quite well in terms of raw performance. But people who has it all always want more and this includes Intel. It is far from happy that AMD has gained a lot of publicity from its latest overclocking records with the Phenom II family. The new 45nm processors from AMD love cold and extreme overclockers have managed to push AMD’s processors not only over 6GHz but even 7GHz.

Intel is still stuck south of 6GHz with the Core i7 family which is really bothering the company. According to new information Intel is already testing its Core i7 975 Extreme Edition processors and will handpick the 1000 best samples. These will be used for overclocking events and presumably also be sent out to acknowledged overclockers that will do their best to achieve new world records.

Intel is aiming for new clock frequency records and even it may feel a bit childish, we are smiling politely. Exactly how high it will reach remains to be seen, but the current records are barely 5800MHz and will most likely fall fast.
