Intel Classmate PC is the chip giant’s answer to the cheap laptop which the One Laptop Per Child foundation has developed. Classmate PC can’t be considered a direct competitor to OLPC’s computer though, it’s first of all based on a Intel platform and costs considerably more; up to $500. The hardware consists of a Celeron M 900MHz, 256MB RAM, 2GB NAND flash for storage. The operating system is optional, Linux or Windows. This sounds far from cheap to us and even if it’s sold exclusively to governments there are cheaper alternatives in the retail channel. Anyway, it seems that this has reach South America and will be sold to Chile, through a subsidiary to ECS.
