Intel’s Menlow platform, which is really something of a mixed blessing, has taken the market by storm with its low-power Atom processor. Menlow is also known as Centrino Atom and can be found in more or less all of the popular netbooks, in some form. Despite the sale success of the Atom processor there have been little apparent bragging about the budget processor and sometimes Intel has been downright condescending. Many have been wondering why and it is becoming all the more obvious now that Intel is presenting the “real” netbook platform.
The Menlow platform uses an ancient chipset that can’t keep up with performance and consumes way too much power for a market like this one. Moorestown is built from the ground up to offer the “right” performance in the ultramobile MID segment, which means that everything from power consumption to features have been revised substantially.
Over at Engadget they’ve published a demo video produced by Intel where they show an early test platform of Moorestown and where it confirms that Moorestown is up to 10 times more energy efficient than today’s Menlow platform. We are truly looking forward to Intel’s launch of the platform which is expected to happen somewhere at the end of next year.
