Intel “Paxville” Xeon with dual cores tested

Paxville is the code-name for Intel’s Xeon-processors equipped with dual cores. Xeon is Intel’s server and workstation-CPU for the x86-market, and a direct competitor to AMD’s Opteron-processors, which by the way has been available with dual cores a while now, and because of that Intel has lost many customers. That is why Paxville is such an important launch for Intel, who for the first time in long time are trailing at home, the x86-server-market. During the recent launch of the dual-core Xeon-architecture pretty much everyone was surprised, including mainboard-manufacturers, expecting a launch towards the end of the year.

What it means right now, is that there are no systems available, and the question is when Paxville-systems will become so in larger quantities. At GamePC, however, they’ve got a hold on a reference-mainboard and two Paxville-CPU’s, and they’ve tested the system thoroughly to determine whether or not it competes with AMD’s Opteron.
