We’ve received several reports which indicate that Intel has something big coming in the graphics section. We’ve seen both job ads for engineers that would work with integrating GPUs into Intel’s processors. At the same time we’ve heard rumors that Intel would license graphics card technology from Imagination Technologies in the form of its PowerVR architecture. Now Imagination Technologies has published a press release which puts the cooperatin in the clear. The chip giant has namely made a huge investment in Imagination Technologies as it has purchased 2.9 % of the company’s stock for £5.28 million.
At the same time Intel and Imagination Technologies has set new plans for its use of the PowerVR architecture with coming Intel products. Intel has earlier used PowerVR techhnology so this licensing is no surprise. but the way they express themselves in the press release at Imagination Technologies makes us wonder.
“Our relationship with Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor company, has reached a new stage that will see the companies working together to enable a growing range of Intel processors with Imagination’s industry-leading graphics and video capabilities. We are delighted to continue and extend this relationship with Intel for our new generation of PowerVR graphics and video cores.”
Exactly what Imagination Technologies VP Hossein Yassaie means remains to be seen, but that it would be a sign for that Intel is indeed working on processorer with graphics technology from the PowerVR architecture is hard to doubt.
