Intel to launch budget OC CPU?

Intel has been selling its Extreme Edition processors with unlocked multipliers for many years. This has provided freedom to overclockers and been one of the reasons the processors have been selling at prices reflected in the name. After a first attempt with an unlocked budget processor in China, Pentium E6500K, Intel seems to have decided to unlock the multiplier with other, cheaper processor models too.

According to Dutch hardware site Tweakers.net Intel’s VP of marketing Steve Peterson revealed that Intel will soon launch its first unlocked budget processor. The processor is geared for overclockers but the socket, clock frequency and price were not revealed. Steve Peterson promised good overclocking though and the biggest limitation will be the cooling.

We would guess we’re dealing with a LGA1156 processor since Intel and its partners have been going all out to market this platform during CeBIT.

We look forward to learning more about this CPU that is said to be limited in supply. We hope that Intel, like AMD, are starting to take the budget overclockers for serious.
