Intel to release Xeon ‘Tulsa’ next week

Tulsa is Intel’s coming Xeon processor for server systems with many processors. Compared to the current Paxville, Tulsa will be 70% faster at 3.4GHz and this is the last processor Intel will develop based on the NetBurst architecture. If there is any market where Intel has lost ground to AMD it is the server market and this is a lot thanks to AMD’s Opteron processors and its scalability with large systems. Tulsa separates itself from Paxville and the other NetBurst processors by being based on Intel’s 65nm manufacturing process and comes with 16MB L3 cache. This has lead to that the processor is bigger than its predecessor despite the 65nm technology: 299mm² vs. 424mm². Unfortunately it has had to reduce the L2 cache from 2MB per core to 1MB to reduce the size.
