Intel is about to bring its Tera-scale program to the next level. Last we heard about Tera-scale Intel had made the first functional 48-core microprocessor. That was back in December of last year and Intel now says it has come so far that the first processors will be shipping out to researchers at Universities worldwide. The engineering samples of Intel’s 48-core CPU will start shipping by the end of Q2.
The processors will ship with clock frequencies of 1.6GHz to 1.8GHz and with power consumption between 25W and 125W. The idea is to support researchers and prepare them for the new multi-core architecture that is intended to be used for cloud computing and other parallel workloads, frequently occurring in university research.
The processor is made with 45 nanometer technology and Intel is working on a similar processor sporting hundreds of cores.
