Intel offers two different Core 2 Duo flavors today, one with 2MB cache and one with 4MB cache. The latter is known as Conroe, while the first has been known as Allendale, up until now. It turns out that ‘Allendale’ is in fact not the native 2MB core we’ve believed it was, but a Conroe with half of the cache deactivated. HKEPC writes that Intel will introduce the real Allendale in February next year though. A core which is built natively with only 2MB L2-cache and will be up to 20% cheaper to produce and make it easier to compete with AMD in the lower price ranges.
