Intel’s Ultra-mobile PC platform that was launched last year has had a bit of a limping start with both expensive and power-consuming devices. Intel has big plans for the UMPC platform though and the power consumption is something that it is trying very hard to reduce. Intel released some new information about its coming UMPC platforms lately, and the processors that will be used with these. Next year we will see the arrival of Silversthorne, which is a circuit that is designed especially for the UMPC market and other smaller handheld devices. Together with the Poulsbo chipset it will be the foundation of the next generation UMPC platform Menlow, which in turn will consume only a quarter of power compared to the platforms of today.

After the Menlow platform, Moorestown will arrive in 2009-2010 and this is where things is really starting to happen. According to Intel, this platform will consume as little as 20 times less than today’s UMPC devices. This will hopefully result in a whole new league of battery times. This is the platform that will be able to power even Windows Vista with decent battery times.
