Intel has now announced that it will continue using its Core 2 Duo E6400 and T7400 processors for many years. But these are not any ancient PCs in 5 years, no Intel has broadened the use for its Core 2 Duo processors considerably. The new target is the embedded market where performance/watt and little space are the most important factors. Intel’s Core 2 Duo models will be used in both ATMs and cash register, I.e. the more advanced versions we assume. The lifespan for these two processor models has now been prolonged to 5-7 years so that they can be used in these kind of machines.

“System-enhancing hardware innovations such as Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) are also supported in the E6400 and T7400 processors. With Intel VT, embedded applications running on separate platforms can be consolidated onto a single platform, helping to fuel cost savings and improve reliability and manageability.”
