Intel Xeon 5100 is the name of the new family of server processors Intel now debutes for the server market and even if the name may not say much it is actually the first processor to use Intel’s rumored Core architecture. Conroe is expected to be launched at the end of July as the stationary equivalent, a processor many are looking forward to. Most knows of the Xeon 5100 series through its code-name, Woodcrest, but now you have to keep track of Intel’s rating system for the new processors. The new Xeon 5100 family namely contains seven different models from day one and its both frequencies and power consumption that separates them.

Processor: Cache Frequency Bus speed: Power consumption:
5160 4MB 3.00 GHz 1333 MHz 80W
5150 4MB 2.667 GHz 1333 MHz 65W
5148 4MB 2.333 GHz 1333 MHz 40W
5140 4MB 2.333 GHz 1333 MHz 65W
5130 4MB 2.00 GHz 1333 MHz 65W
5120 4MB 1.866 GHz 1066 MHz 65W
5110 4MB 1.60 GHz 1066 MHz 65W

Just as expected Intel has been focusing on performance/watt and compared to the Xeon 5000 family it’s like day and night. The most efficient processors of the 5000 series consumed 95W while the most hungry of the 5100 only consumes 80W. The really nice with this is that the 5100 series is compatible with the Bensley platform where the Xeon 5000 has housed, thus you will not need a new platform to use Intel’s new server processors.

In common for all Xeon 5100 models is the 65nm manufacturing process, 64-Bit support (EM64T), Virtualization Technology and Execute Disable Bit. Xeon 5140 and up also has a more advanced power saving technology through Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology.

We have earlier reported about a preview of Intel’s Woodcrest series and just as many hoped things are looking promising for Intel’s new server series.
