Woodcrest is the server version of Intel’s coming Core architecture and is the one of the three, Merom being the mobile and Conroe the stationary, closest to us. While Conroe has made a quite impressive impression after our benching at DH while Woodcrest, and Merom, have not made the same impression. Even if we’ve seen some shorter tests and benchmarks with both of them it gets a little more interesting now that GamePC has released its preview of Woodcrest. They’ve come across two models, 2.0GHz (Xeon 5130) and 2.33GHz (Xeon 5140). Comparing them with two Dempsey Xeons (NetBurst) and a series of AMD Opterons (265, 270, 275, 280 & 285) the two mid-range processors perform rather well.
However, they do not perform exceptionally compared to the competition but are above all cooler than the old Xeons, compared to Opteron the differences are rather small overall. How the faster Woodcrests performs remains to be seen but things are looking well according to GamePC.
