Intel has earlier used the so called DToS concept (DeskTop on Server) for its introduction servers with only one processor. It has simply taken a dual-core Pentium D processor, which is really intended for the desktop market, and used it inside the smaller servers. It started using DToS at the end of 2005 to compete with AMD’s Opteron processors and this led to that small and medium-sized companies invested in Intel’s single-processor servers. AMD followed Intel and launched its Opteron 1xx series.

First it was suppose to be Intel’s Conroe processors that would be installed inside the singel-processor servers, but Intel has now chosen to trash the DToS concept to make it easier to separate the desktop and server processors. Instead it will launch a new series of processors for singel-processor servers, namely Xeon 3000.

“In addition, Intel will launch a lineup of entry-level chipsets to support the Xeon 3000 processor series for uni-processor servers – the 3000/ 3010 chipset family (codenamed Mukilteco) – in the middle of August, according to the sources.”
