Intel’s next generation Atom platform is called Cedar Trail and the launch of the ultraportable platform is slated for Q4. Already we have detailed information on the new Atom processors sporting 32nm technology with DirectX 10.1 and higher clock frequencies.

Cedar Trail consists of two circuits, Intel’s new Cedarview-D Atom processores and the NM10 chipset. The new Cedarview-D processors builds on the same base architecture as Pineview-D (Atom D510, Atom N550, etc.) and will be equal to current models in terms of raw CPU performance at equal clocks.

Thanks to new and more efficient 32 nanometer technology Intel has been able to tune the frequencies to new heights, moving from 1.83 GHz up 2.13 GHz with Cedarview-D. They will also consume less power, 10 watt vs. 13 watt, compared to Pineview-D processor.

Intel Looks use just dual-core Atom models with Cedarview-D and of the two models has been detailed only the flagship Atom D2700 supports HyperThreading for up to four threads.

The biggest update with Intel’s new Atom processors is the integrated graphics. Here we find support for DirectX 10.1 and other good news such as Blu-ray 2.0 and HD video acceleration and improved number of video outputs and dual monitor support. There is no information on the performance or architecture of the GPU, but it will look a big step forward for the Intel Atom platform, even if it on paper will still be a generation behind AMD and its Fusion APUs.

Intel Cedar Trail target the energy efficient budget market so count on seeing the new chipsets in ntebooks and nettops in Q4 2011.
