iPhone 2.1 on the way?

Few things travel faster than rumors and this especially applies to the world of Apple, Macs and the rest of its i-products. A few days ago a rumor started to spread that a new iPhone might be around the corner. This was dismissed by some, while others kept their hopes up and some cursed Apple for launching a new model every time they had managed to save up for the last one. It turned out that the rumor was a bit ill-founded but still interesting.

It all started when macrumors.com found a reference in the current iPhone software pointing to ”iPhone 2.1”. After that the rumor started to spread like crazy and the discussions started. Some claimed that it was only a software update, but Apple usually doesn’t refer to this like this. The first version iPhone was 1.1 while Phone 3G was 1.2. If this pattern should continue, version 2.1 is certainly a completely new phone. The increased competition speaks in favor of a new phone. As we reported a while back, the iPhone sales dropped by 40% in the last quarter, but it still sold more than expected.

Like most Apple rumors there is little solid to go by, which means salt should be considered and if you just bought a new iPhone you can probably feel safe that it will last for some time. It’s still interesting to think about what Apple might add to the next version, perhaps a working camera and MMS?
