iPod Touch wasn’t just the first real media player from Apple, but it seems to have spurred the competition. iPod Touch boosted interest and demand for digital media players with touchscreens significantly and most other manufacturers have now started working on similar players of their won, and the winner seems to be Microsoft, despite the increased competition for the Zune player. It turns out that many of the media players are based on the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 platform.

Most chips that supports the WinCE platform are still quite expensive and often limited to PDAs, GPS and other similar devices. That hasn’t stopped the media player manufacturers though as many are planning to introduce new products the upcoming months, and the Taiwanese manufacturer Ergotech is expected to launch a new digital media player based on the WinCE platform in January 2008.
