Assembly ’08 has just ended and it has been a very productive event. Especially for overclockers Marcus “Kinc” Hultin and Petri “SF3D” Korhonen. The two were benching at ASUS’ booth and they were able to do some serious damage to the ORB and the Hall of Fame. Their main weapon was three Asus ENGTX280 TOP on top of an ASUS Striker II Extreme, also housing an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770.

The cooling was, of course, liquid nitrogen. Both for the graphics cards and the processor. The benchmark was 3DMark Vantage and the goal was to claim the lead in all four presets. And so they did. One by one, the records fell: Entry, Performance, High and Extreme. It’s not as easy as it may sound though, because each preset requires its own tweaking and settings. Just because one setup worked well with one preset doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work well with the next.

The entry record was tweaked to E55139 points. With this preset the processor was overclocked to 5746MHz. They quickly moved on to the Performance preset where they actually kept the CPU at the same level. The graphics-related frequencies were 950MHz core clock, 1950MHz shader clock and 1300MHz memory clock. This resulted in a score of P29650 points.

Next up was the High Preset where the CPU frequency had to be lowered to 5600MHz and the GPU clock to 935MHz, while the graphics memory and shaders were kept at 1300MHz and 1950MHz respectively. This made it possible for them to reach a score of H24420 points. The third record of the event.

Last but certainly not least was the Extreme preset which puts a tremendous load on the system and the graphics cards especially. Contrary to what you may have thought, they pushed the CPU even higher now, up to 5800MHz. Were not sure what the GPU was clocked at during this record run, but we’re guessing they were in the same area. The score was X18525 points.
