The USB 3.0 standard is starting to become more available since more or less all new computers have at least one USB 3.0 port. Kingston has now launched what could be the world’s fastest USB 3.0 memory with transfer speeds over 100 MB/s.
USB 3.0 have long been a technology that has been available but not really used. Since it is a new standard it is not unepxected. More and more USB 3.0 units are finding their way onto the market and everything from USB memories to external harddrives can be had with the new standard.
Kingston’s new DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 series is now released sporting really nice specifications since it is a USB memory we’re dealing with. HyperX 3.0 brings up to 225 MB/s and 135 MB/s read and write speed, respectively, depending on capacity. The memory comes in three sizes 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, and the memory is of course backwards compatible with USB 2.0 – but the speed is limited to 30 MB/s then.
It is not entirely clear what kind of memory circuits that are found inside the metal and rubber cover. It is not impossible that it uses a memory controller that is similar to those found in SSDs.
DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 series will not be the cheapest model on the market, but actually one of the more expensive. The 64 GB and 128 GB models will cost 193 and 377 dollar, respectively. The 256 GB model that is the most likely candidate to actually achieve the promised numbers has not been priced yet, but we we are guessing somewhere above 500 USD. Despite the high prices Kingston DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 has to be seen as a nice addition to the market since it is a USB memory that actually uses USB 3.0.
