The creation of flexible displays isn’t exactly anything new and we’ve reported on so called e-paper displays earlier. But this time it’s different, as LG.Philips LCD just announced that it has managed to create the first A4-sized e-paper display. The display measures 14.1″ and is just like any other e-paper display very flexible and bendable. The electronic paper utilizes electronic ink from E Ink to give the e-paper a maximum of 4096 colors. The image quality is supposed to be equal to that of the ordinary (non-electronic) paper, in other words you probably don’t want to change your LCD/CRT for an e-paper display. But we can still clearly see a market for the e-paper considering its advantages in other areas.
Another advantage is that e-paper displays are very energy efficient and super thin, just about 300 micrometer.
“Like the black and white flexible display, the color version uses a substrate that arranges TFT on metal foil rather than glass, allowing it to recover its original shape after being bent. This model includes a color filter (CF) coated onto the plastic substrate, allowing it to display color images.”
