Jonas “Mean Machine” Klar managed to hold his ground and was crowned Swedish champion of Percentage Overclocking. As the SCPC 2009 ended he moved on to the next project. This time it wasn’t the CPU in the center of things, but the GPU. The victim was AMD’s Radeon HD 5870 that is rumored to leave factories with 1GHz core clock in a month or so. Jonas wanted more though and turned to his good friend liquid nitrogen for some assistance.
The result was an impressive GPU clock frequency at 1300MHz where the card was stable through 3DMark06. Unfortunately the processor, an Intel Core i7 870, wasn’t interested in being overclocked when running 3D applications, but it’s still an impressive speed that shows that Jonas isn’t just fond of CPUs, he doesn’t mind taking GPUs for a spin if he gets the chance.
The best of all is that Jonas has plans for more and will continue his extreme overclocking of Radeon HD 5870. We hope to return with more pictures and perhaps even some live overclocking.
