The price difference between DDR2 and DDR3 memory have increased lately and now we’re reached by stories that claims memory manufacturers have an unusual approach to reduce the price difference. It will namely sell DDR3 chips packaged with DDR2 chips. This is since the price difference on the spot market has climbed over 50%. Friday last week, 1Gb DDR3 chip cost 1.95 USD while the equivalent 1Gb DDR2 chip cost 1.21 USD. On the contract market the difference is around 10%.

DDR3 prices have increased after higher demand thanks to both Intel and AMD having DDR3 platforms out on the market. Availability hasn’t kept up though, which has pushed prices even higher, especially when the notebook industry are going to focus even more on DDR3 with coming models.
