It wasn’t long ago we reported about how Apple was talking to telecom company Verizon to sell its iPhone and other in 2010. It was said that Apple presented prototypes of a new iPhone and a tablet-like device. We did wonder why Apple was so eager to break its exclusive cooperation with AT&T and went as far as to lure Verizon with whole new products. More pieces of the puzzle have been discovered.

The latest rumors claim that Verizon isn’t just negotiating with Apple before 2010, it is also talking to Microsoft about a smartphone that could be a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

“Microsoft is a major player in software for cellphones, but it is working hard to develop a new device that will rival Apple’s.”

The phone is based on an updated version of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, with support for Windows Marketplace, which is an equivalent to Apple’s App Store.

The touch-based mobile phone has been code-named “Pink” and even if Microsoft supplies the software and helps with the hardware design it is a third party that will make the phone.

If this turns out to be true it might explain why Apple is so eager to keep Verizon on its side.
