Microsoft hasn’t exactly been doing extremely well lately, even though it hasn’t performed bad in any way, the lack of growth hasn’t been a problem earlier. Even worse is that Microsoft’s competition is going very well and gets the attention of both investors and customers, Google and Yahoo! are the two best examples. The common nominator here has not been selling software, which Microsoft has always gone for, but spreading its software over the Internet and rely on advertizing for income. In the end, Microsoft’s stock hasn’t been increasing to any noteworthy degree the last couple f years, while the competition continues to grow. Now it seems that Microsoft is about to go through an extreme makeover to tackle the future use of software and the solution is the Internet.
Microsoft has signed its new recruit Ray Ozzie, known as the programmers behind Lotus Notes, to handle this huge project, which says a lot about the faith Bill Gates has in Ozzie, that has actually only been employed for two months.
“Put simply, Ozzie’s assignment is to Webify everything: To intertwine Microsoft’s entire product line – software for consumers, software for businesses, Xboxes, all of it – with the vast and ever-growing power of the Net.”
One of Microsoft’s plans with focus on the Internet is an online storage service called Live Drive. This service can be used by consumers to store anything from movies, music, e-post, documents; anything really. The data will be available from any type of unit, stationary or portable. It’s going to be interesting following Microsoft’s development in the future.
