We’ve earlier reported about the new domain .mobi which is a new standard for homepages developed for the mobile market. The domain name, pronounced “dotmobi”, has been around since May but earlier only members of the Wireless Industry Trade Associations have been able to register addresses. Even though more than 13,000 companies have registered dotmobi addresses it’s a very small portion of the mobile phone users which actually use their phone to browse the web and dotmobi has not had the breakthrough they’d hoped. In an attempt to increase the Internet browsing with mobile phones Mobile Top Level Domain (MTLD) has not let the address registering of the dotmobi domain free.
In other words, anyone can register a dotmobi address and create a homepage optimized for mobile phones. MTLD expects that up to 200,000 mobile sites will be registered during the next year. All dotmobi sites will be optimized for viewing in mobile phones and they certainly need an upgrade as there are very few sites today which are otpimized for mobiles. The registering of dotmobi addresses costs about $25, for a period of at least 2 years.
“MTLD is promising that websites with a registered dotmobi address will be optimised for mobile phones, guaranteeing users a consistent experience.”
This could be a turning point for mobile use of the Internet and we’re eager to see how the new domain will be greeted by site owners.
