Mobile phones will be the end of iPod

Small preview imageBill Gates has frequently commented on Apple’s portable music player iPod and at several occations Microsoft’s founder has been pro to other companies MP3-players, e.g. Creative Zen and iRiver H10. Once again, according to Apple Matters, Bill has critized both Apple’s iPod and Mac system. In its article Apple Matters hardly considers these statements as positive ones but also depicts a scenario where Bill Gates can be on to something. It’s when hes says that future mobiles will kill off the iPod as it is not just for MP3s.

The mobile phone will in the future be a unit used for storing music, calendrar, address book, etc. According to Microsoft it’s of course Windows Mobile that will be used for this.

“This is where Bill could have a point. The standalone Palm is largely dead. A mere memory of the dotcom days when having a Palm 100 was the thing. Now it is either a Blackberry, or Palm-integrated phone. This is the one device that people are carrying around. Throw in a hard-drive and a decent (read Microsoft) user-interface and suddenly the iPod is like the old standalone Palms of the past, relegated to dusty draws and eBay.”

We can only agree to that mobile phones are becoming more and more flexible and a good replacement for many portable units and how Apple will handle this with its iPod-series remains to see. We’ already know mobiles that supports iTunes is on the way. The question is whether Apple’s will create the future and/or how it will look.
