A while back we reported about a new codec that claimed to outperform every other HD codec on the market today, Fairghild by SyncroTek. The developers claimed that this new codec would use less less bandwidth while at the same time have lower hardware requirements for playback. Some mighty claims, but we saw nothing that could actually confirm this. However, over at doom9 they have a thread dedicated to the subject and there a new member has posted some encoded samples for comparison. The samples did however leave us with a couple of questions and when we thought he had left the forum he returned to explain the first samples he had published.
It seems that videos were encoded at a worse case scenario, a live stream.
However, Syncrotek is not planning on revealing any more information, but the website is now pretty clear in that Fairchild is indeed developed to function as a media distribution platform, with VOD (Video-On-Demand) and IPTV as its two primary targets.
Considering what we’ve seen so far, this may very well be a decent way of distributing media as the quality was in fact more than OK in comparison with the other codecs.
