Within a very near future an invasion of dual-core processors will take place on the x86-market. Intel will mainly aim for the desktopmarket, while AMD prioritizes workstations.
With all this information at hand that has been cirkulating the web the last couple of months it’s hard to really know what’s correct and what’s not and over at PC Perspective they taken a closer look AMD’s plans for dual-core processors.

The Article is based on information directly from AMD and is underlined with images from the companies own productpresentations.
Some of you might have been wondering why AMD choose to wait with dual cores for the desktopmarket. The answer isn’t all that hard to grasp when you reall think about it.

“They will be releasing dual core Opterons in the next couple of months and following that up with desktop Athlon 64 dual core processors sometime in the second half of the year. For AMD it does make more sense to release the dual core parts to the server/workstation market first, as those areas are the ones that have the multi-threaded applications to take full advantage of the additional power.”

In the article we learn that AMD has used dual processorcores on the same chip and how they choose to do this is different from Intel’s approach.
Among others the information that states that AMD’s dual-core Athlon 64 will be fully compatible Socket 939-mainboards is being strengthen, at most you will require a BIOS-update. A really nice accomplishment from AMD!
