With the upcoming release of the Athlon64, motherboard producers have begun to save up with compatible motherboards to await consumers’ shopping eagerness. There seems to be a rather quaint problem at hand though; AMD seems to have misjudged the market and there might be a lack of processors the first few months.
As you might understand, the interest for motherboards is rather low if no processors are available. Bearing this in mind, the large Asian motherboard manufacturers have presented AMD with a proposal of selling the motherboards and processors in the same package.
Digitimes reported that AMD hasn’t given any official answer to the proposal, but it apparently seems quite optimistic.
The Athlon64 packages will apparently be targeted towards the high-end market due to its relatively high price.
At HardOCP, they’ve squeezed out even more information concerning the scarcity of Athlon64s, and it undoubtedly looks very dark for this year’s last quarter. During the first quarter of 2004, the production is expected to increase strikingly, however none of this information is official from AMD.
