MSI has before CeBIT 2011 decided to show some of its coming platforms and one of the more interesting solutions was a presentation of the first AM3+ motherboard supporting AMD’s coming Bulldozer processors. With a black processor socket the first AM3+ motherboards are actually based on the current AMD 8 chipset series.

Why MSI – and others – have chosen to launch Socket AM3+ motherboards with AMD 8xx chipsets was never mentioned, but there is no doubt the chipsets are compatible with AMD’s coming Bulldozer architecture and the Zambezi processors that are expect to launch in Q2.

By using existing chipsets AMD and its partners has the opportunity to increase the volume of Socket AM3+ motherboards and according to MSI’s presentation we should expect the new AM3+ boards in April.

To separate the motherboards from regular AM3 boards MSI will use a black socket and even though they use older chipsets MSI will offer full support for the Bulldozer architecture and all of its features.

Also ASRock and Gigabyte – most likely the majority of motherboard manufacturers – are expected to launch Socket AM3+ motherboards sporting AMD 890FX and AMD 890GX chipsets in Q2. these will get full support for AMD’s new Zambezi processors that brings a new architecture, up to eight cores and clock frequencies above 3.5 GHz+ to tackle Intel’s Core i7 family.
