NEC seems to be the first manufacturer to launch a solution to the raging war betwen HD DVD and Blu-ray. Both are struggling for the consumer’s attention and money and even if they use the same basic technology it seems that developing a chip which can handle both formats have been harder than anticipated. NEC seems to be the company that has managed to solve the riddle and has now announced that will start shipping a circuit supporting with both Blu-ray and HD DVD. If we now get the remaining compatible components we may very well see dual-format units soon. The new circuit will be priced the same as NEC’s circuit that handles each separate format. But first of all we need the optics to handle both Blu-ray and HD DVD, and then we’re close.
