Netgear has now launched its first Ethernet products for the power grid that is specified at speeds up to 200Mbps. Netgear HDX101 is the name of the wall plug adaptor you connect to the power grid. To the adaptor you connect a regular Ethernet cable. A HDX101 adaptor can be connected to your router while another can be put in another room where you can plug in another computer you want to access the network. Since Netgears Powerline HD Ethernet adaptors are quite pointless by themselves it has also launched a kit of two adaptors called Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter Kit HDXB101.

“NETGEAR’s Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter and Kit (HDX101 and HDXB101) for high quality video and gaming, is an ideal solution for connecting a PC, DVR, X-Box 360™, PS3™, or other game console to the home network. Simply plug one HDX101 into an AC outlet near your router and the other HDX101 near the device you wish to network.”

Netgear claims that you will be able to reach speeds at up to 200Mbps during optimal conditions. An interesting alternative to the wireless network and something we will follow with interest. A Powerline HD Ethernet adaptor costs 129 dollar but a kit with two costs 249 dollar, so if there is anything hindering a success of networking through the powerlines its the prices.
