The performance of a processor is not solely dictated by its frequency. This has been known through the ages, but with some of Intel this was painfully obvious during the NetBurst era of the first part of the millennium. High frequencies are still exciting and a Ukrainian overclocker called Tin EOF beaten the world record in raw CPU frequency with a Celeron D 347 processor, hitting 8199MHz.
The processor is based on the clock-frequency-loving Cedar Mill architecture and operates at 3.06GHz from factory. To achieve a clock frequency over 8GHz he didn’t just need extreme cooling, but Tin EOF also had to use extremely high temperatures during the preparations. No less than +200 grader Celsius to remove the heatspreader from the processor.
Heatspreader won’t come off unless heated to the extreme
By exposing the core he could lower the temperature even further and with 2.096V he could achieve a final speed of 8199.5MHz, which is a whole 18MHz than the last record, set with a Celeron 356 CPU.
