Browsing the web is something you can do with most communication devices and mobile phones is one of the categories which gets more and more focus on Internet browsing. Getting around on special systems which the mobile service providers has created is usually not a problem, but those who wants to use the mobile for the daily browsing is in for a rough ride. Not just getting online, but also to find pages that can be browsed through a mobile phone. This is a problem both consumers and companies have realized and now several of the big IT companies; Microsoft, Google, Vodafone Group, Nokia and more, have started up a new company called Mobile Top Level Domain.
Mobile Top Level Domain aims to improve the usability of the Internet for mobile units such as mobile phones. One important step is to launch a new domain class called dot-Mobi (.Mobi). Several thousand .mobi domains was registered only in a few hours after that Mobile Top Level Domain open up Monday. This despite that only members of the Wireless Industry Trade Associations can register at the moment. We’re clearly looking forward to seeing how the .mobi domains will be used and it feels like the only real solution to the growing use of Internet browsing through mobile units.
“To make wireless surfing smoother, Mobile Top Level Domain has required Web developers to follow a set of rules. One rule requires dot-mobi sites not to “cause pop-ups or other windows to appear.” Another requires developers to “divide (dot-mobi web) pages into usable but limited size portions.”
