Playstation 3 firmwares seem to be coming all the time and the newest one, v1.82, brings some rather interesting updates. The first and biggest one is perhaps the update and support for AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4). This is an HD video format that can now be played on the Playstation 3. Besides that Sony have been working on improving the backwards compatibility with older Playstation games, especially Playstation 2. The downloading has also been tweaked so that you can download more than one thing at a time. Previous 1.8X updates have included a DVD Upscaler and improved networking performance and stability. You can use Sony’s own Compatibility Status site to check which of the older games that work with the new PS3.
