According to Ray Maguire, the boss at Sony Computer Entertainment UK, the next generation video game consoles doesn’t have powerful processor just for handling advanced graphical effects. They’ve simply handed this task over to the graphics circuits and now the focus is on AI, Artificial Intelligence, instead. Graphics is of one of the most crucial parts of the gaming experience but at the same we’ve reached a level of graphics when the time has come to look at other areas which needs improvement. According to Maguire, AI is such an aread and it will be the great next thing to look forward to with the next generation of video game console and as one might’ve expected there was a reference to PS3’s Cell processor.
“The Cell chip is so powerful it can do 256 million calculations per second… That means one thing for us in the videogames industry: artificial intelligence.”
I don’t think anyone is completely satisfied with the AI in games today and that it has now chosen to focus on this makes it even more interesting to see what the next generation video games will offer.
