We got some strong responses on the article we published a week ago on the problems with the coming nForce chipset. The chipset was suppose to arrive earlier this month, but due to issues with the just launched Yorkfield-based processor Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650, the launch was postponed until December. We were told by more than one source that Intel had “left out” some details that NVIDIA needed to get the new chipset to work, but right now it doesn’t really matter if that was true or not, because the nForce 780i does run both retail and ES Yorkfields and is suppose to do it fairly well at this stage.
We’ve already seen great results with engineering samples of the QX9650 on the coming platform, but the issues has always been related to the retail versions of the chip, not ES versions.
According to motherboard manufacturers, this has been straightened out more or less by now. They couldn’t promise greatness, but could verify that the nForce 780i/790i platform is improving and that they are still planning to launch it the coming month if the improvements keep coming at this rate.
Oh, and yes, Intel wants SLI for its desktop chipsets, wants it bad.
