nForce3 + Opteron 144

X-bit labs has written a nice article about a nForce3-based Opteron system.
nForce3 + Opteron can turn out to be a very popular combination amongst computer enthusiasts as the forthcoming Athlon 64 is nothing but a stripped version of the Opteron.

It’s starting to be more and more clear that for every test that one read AMD has to increase the clockfrequencies rapidly on their CPUs. As it looks right now the ALU is way too puny to pick up the fight against the Pentium 4 3.2 GHz in a great amount of tests.

Right now the wind seems to be blowing in the favour of Intel. The question is how high AMD will be able to raise the clockfrequencies and about how “injured” the Athlon 64 becomes because of the lacking cache memory or the missing memorychannel.

To get a picture of how the Athlon 64 will perform you can look at the single channel results and probably remove a few percent.
