Notebooks have been taken a serious hit lately as their batteries have turned out to be not that reliable. Apple and Dell have as we’ve earlier reported about recalled over 6 million batteries, batteries made by Sony, and Toshiba has also chosen to recall 340,000 Sony-made batteries. As several reports have appeared with flaming and exploding computers some have even accused laptops of being a health hazard. This is of course a gross overstatement as long as all of the components are working as they should but that the batteries could use make over is something most poeple agree on, even the manufacturers.
According to Ars Technica they have been having discussions about a new lithium-ion battery standard with several of the largest notebook manufacturers on the market. Dell was the host of the meeting and among the rest we saw HP, Polycom, Inc and Lenevo. For some reason Apple never showed up, despite its extensive recalls lately. Sony who made the batteries was not invited though.
Would the manufacturers be able to unite for a standard for lithium-ion batteries it would improve the batteries safety and compatibility while it should be cheaper to manufacture batteries for a standardized platform, which hopefully we, the consumers, will be able to gain from.
