The notebook market has been growing steadily and with the addition of the new netbook segment the market has boomed. The new, flexible and highly convenient netbooks have broadened the market for notebooks quite a lot with the already big assortment of netbooks. Things have been going so well for the notebook market that has now surpassed the desktop market, in the USA, during the last quarter.

Market analyst company IDC has published a report that states that the notebook sales made up 55.2% of the total PC sales during the third quarter in the USA. It’s not that the desktop sales are down, but it’s the sales of notebooks that are up considerably.

“The 55% ratio was made possible by a record volume of notebooks shipped in 3Q08 – over 9.5 million units – representing more than 18% growth both year over year and on a sequential basis, according to IDC’s preliminary data. These figures were reached amid a relatively active back-to-school season and the burgeoning financial crisis, which captured headlines but did not immediately affect the PC market’s performance.”

Interestingly, among regular consumers notebooks are even more popular. More than 70% of all PC sold are notebooks.
