Already before the end of December PC builders had started to prepare for sloping sales as the economy started going downhill. Now that statistics for the first quarter of 2009 has appeared it becomes all too obvious that PC sales are down. In Q1 2009, 67.2 million computers were sold, which is 6.5% less year-to-year.
The reason for the sales hasn’t dropped more is spelled netbooks. Overall the new assortment of budget computers has held the market up at decent levels and in the USA the sales were only down by 0.3% in the same period, which can once again be explained by the broader assortment of netbooks.
If we look to the market situation HP has increased its lead by moving from 18.1% to 19.8% during the year that passed. The number two spot, Dell, has dropped more than 1.5% is now only 0.1% before Acer on third place with 13.1% and 13.0% market share.
