Graphics circuit manufacturer NVIDIA has launched a new chip for the mobile market called APX 2500. The new processor is designed for devices using the Windows Mobile interface and sports both hardware-accelerated playback of high definition video and advanced 3D applications, such as 3D games. NVIDIA says that its APX 2500 processor can handle all of these quite demanding applications with minimal power consumption.
“The APX 2500 applications processor delivers an unprecedented 10 hours of 720p HD playback—an industry first for video quality and power consumption on a mobile device, as well as stunning HD camcorder and ultra-high-resolution photo imaging capabilities.”
NVIDIA has been working closely with Microsoft when developing the new multimedia processor and the goal was to create mobile devices which can handle PC-geared applications. Everything from video calls, watch movies or play 3D games.
Engadget got a chance to look at NVIDIA’s APX 2500 and among others, they got to see how the mobile device handled the classic FPS game Quake 3. We’re eager to find out when we will see devices using the APX 2500, and if the mobile phone manufacturers will implement it the way NVIDIA intends it. I wouldn’t mind playing some Quake 3 on my phone while waiting for the benchmarks to complete.
