NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB was launched yesterday and to many this could be the most important G80-based graphics card to be launched so far. We’ve seen proofs of the GeForce 8800 series’ enormous performance, but unfortunately the models available, GTS 640MB and GTX, have been far from cheap. The G80 architecture has simply been exclusive for enthusiasts or those with plenty of money. NVIDIA will continue broaden its G80 assortment and GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB is the first step.
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB is as the name implies more or less a copy of the current GeForce 8800 GTS model. The only thing that separates the two is the amount of memory and the price. NVIDIA has cut the memory by half, from 640MB to 320MB, but it has kept the other specifications identical to GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB. The price has gone down with almost $100 and it really shows how expensive graphics memory is, but the most important is that it opens up a new market to NVIDIA.
GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB costs about $100 less than its sibling and even if its good to see cards closer to the $300 mark it’s still a lot of money. Anyhow, it seems NVIDIA’s new G80 card performs really well and the reduced amount of memory doesn’t seem to affect today’s games to any significant degree. According to the reviews that have appeared NVIDIA seems to have done a great job with its new 320MB version of 8800 GTS, the toughest competitor is ironically the 640MB version of the same card as the prices have been coming down the last month or so.
