NVIDIA has launched a new chipset called GeForce 9300 and just like other GeForce chipsets these offer a relatively powerful integrated graphics circuit. As the successor of GeForce 8200, NVIDIA’s latest creation will got to war against Intel G45 and AMD 790GX which are both of the latest generation with lots of multimedia features and overall very suitable for HTPC use. The latter also applies to GeForce 9300 as the motherboards use the micro-ATX formfactor.
NVIDIA isn’t just trying to break ground on the HTPC market but also transfer the fine 3D performance from the GeForce graphics cards to the GeForce chipsets. It supports Intel’s 775 processors and therefor mainly competes with Intel G45 but also AMD 790GX, but the former of the two doesn’t really offer much 3D performance.
NVIDIA has done an excellent job with the 3D performance in GeForce 9300, just enough to knock down AMD 790GX form the throne in most games. These are still integrated chipsets, but things are certainly moving in the right direction. GeForce 9300 uses the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU, which you can also find in Apple’s new MacBooks.
Other than that we see a greater focus on HTPC with HDMI outputs and other goodies integrated. More information on GeForce 9300 and some of the first motherboards can be found in the reviews listed below;
