Physics effects in games got a real upswing when AGEIA revealed its PhysX circuit. ATI has earlier stated that it doesn’t consider an external solution a good way to go, but should instead go for a more flexible GPU and now NVIDIA has, together with HAVOK announced that it will isplay a new software solution for simulating physical effects with the help of SLI instead. Havok FX, which the new solution is called, is so far just under development, but is being evaluated by several game developers. It has been designed for Shader Model 3.0 capable cards and is not restricted to only NVIDIA’s cards, even if you will need the power from its GeForce 6/7 series in SLI to be able to use it.
“Through Havok FX, GPUs can simulate the interactions of thousands of colliding rigid bodies, a fundamental technique of physics computation seen in today’s latest games. It’s now possible to compute the components of friction, collisions, gravity, mass, and velocity that form the basis of rigid body physics. Havok FX is designed for GPUs supporting Shader Model 3.0, including the NVIDIA GeForce 6 and 7 Series GPUs.”
During the day we’ve received information about a few articles taking a closer look at NVIDIA and HAVOC’s new creation.
