AMD recently launched its new Quad FX platform and as you perhaps know it’s NVIDIA that supplies the chipsets for “4×4”. Now the official announcement has been made by NVIDIA where it presents its nForce 680a SLI chipset for the Quad FX platform. NVIDIA doesn’t seem to have any intention of launching the nForce 680 chipset for AMD’s regular Athlon platform but this is a launch strictly for the workstation market and its extreme enthusiasts. To power all of the features which the Quad FX platform supports NVIDIA has used two NF680a SLI chipsets but if you look at the specifications it’s quite easy to see what this has resulted in.
“NVIDIA nForce 680a SLI MCP provides processing capabilities on a massive scale, by allowing multimedia and megatasking users to harness the power of up to 4 GPUs, 8 displays, 12 SATA hard drives, and 4 gigabit Ethernet connections, all from a single consumer desktop PC.”
As we’ve reported earlier on, ASUS is the only company which has a motherboard for the AMD Quad FX platform. Those who wants to invest in AMD’s new workstation/enthusiast platform have to turn to system builders or for Quad FX processor kits and an ASUS L1N64-SLI WS motherboard. The processors can also be found as prizes in our Swedish Computer Performance Championship.
