NVIDIA seems to be broadening its assortment of motherboard chipsets and even if AMD has acquired arch rival ATI there are new chipsets coming for the Socket AM2 platform. NVIDIA MCP72 is the name of the new single-chip chipset, which among others sports HyperTransport 3.0, which also means that the circuit can be used with coming Socket AM2+ motherboards. The fact that NVIDIA has managed to put all of this functionality into one chip makes it possible to reduce power consumption and save space on the the motherboard. We can expect a number of different versions of the MCP72 chipset when it’s launched together with AMD’s launch of its first Socket AM2+ processors; Agena and Budapest.
