NVIDIA is, according to rumors, working on the next version of its SLI technology. At VR-Zone they’ve published some information about the new technology and even if the specific details are rather few the overall improvement seems to be a broader usage. SLI 2.0 is namely said to support multi-GPU systems with different cards and rumors say that the GeForce 8×00 series will sport SLI configurations with more cards. You will be able to, if the motherboards allows, use up to 4, 6 or 8 graphics cards together.
Exactly how the support for different cards will be remains to be seen, but it’s at least clear that you will not be forced to use identical cards to run a SLI setup. Whether this will work with different models of the same family or even different generations remains to be seen as well.
This is of course highly unofficial information, which, as always, should be considered with a pinch of salt, but the fact that NVIDIA is tuning its SLI technology hardly comes a surprise.
