Elpida, together with RAMBUS, have announced the world’s fastest DRAM circuit. The chip is a 512 Mb 4.8GHz XDR DRAM circuit and based on the XDR memory architecture. The high operational frequency results in an industry-leading bandwidth of 9.6 GB/s, about six times the speed of the DDR2-800 standard. The chip is made with Elpida’s 70 nm manufacturing process and uses several key RAMBUS technologies for reducing swing and noise, but most of all it sports the Octal Data Rate (ODR) technology, which makes it possible to transfer 8 bits of data during a single clock cycle.



The actual clock frequency of the chip is 600 MHz, but is able to achieve 4.8 GHz through the RAMBUS ODR technology. Elpida targets the new DRAM circuit for high-performance devices such as HDTVs, gaming consoles, PCs, servers and workstations.
